Variant items typically refer to different versions or variations of a particular item. They are different only in characteristics such as size, color, style, or other features, yet they belong to the same item group.
For instance, a t-shirt available in different colors (red, blue, green) or sizes (small, medium, large) would be considered a variant item of the same basic item. Just as electronics like smartphones or laptops may have variants with different storage capacities, colors, or specifications while being the same model or product line.
Variant items are used to offer customers choices and cater to diverse preferences without having to create entirely separate item groups for each variation. Efficient inventory management systems can track these variants separately to manage stock levels and fulfill orders accurately.
These variants are assigned to the main item (in the RETAIL7 system, these are called variant master items), allowing customers to select their preferred variant when making a purchase. This organizational structure simplifies the shopping experience for customers while streamlining inventory and sales management for you.
In Chapter 4.1.1 Item list it was already explained how to create variant master items and assign variants to them. But in order to be able to assign these variants to the master variant item, the corresponding variants and their definitions must be created first.
In the next two chapters, we explain how to configure your Variant settings with the help of Variant definitions and Variant item groups.
